Getting Started with Collector's Assistant

welcome Welcome to the first in a series of tips to help you get organized with you collection.  Let's start off with a one that will help lay the groundwork for organization.

I can say with all honesty, that this is the most complete and versatile program for collectors available anywhere in the entire civilized world. Since it has been made with the pre-thought of having it completely customizable, there are many modifications, adjustments and tweaks that you can make. It all comes down to just how adventurous you’d like to be.  If you can imagine it, the chances are the Collectors Assistant Plus can do it. Don’t be afraid to play around.  Just make sure you do back-ups of your data just in case you mess things up. That way you’ll be able to restore things back the way they were.  If by any chance you can think of something useful that is not presently an option, please let me know, and I’ll look into possibly adding the features or function into an upgrade or service pack.

First Steps

1. Install the program onto your computer.
2. Download the latest service pack/updates from Carlisle Development download area.

Create Your Collections (names)
I recommend that you create collections for your main collections separately, then a separate one for your traders or items for sale. Breaking down your collections also makes it easier when scrolling down the listing grid reviewing your items.  It also helps to make things more organized.

An important thing to remember is that if you are going to have collections of different types, i.e., Silver Strikes, chips, tokens, etc, you should make sure that you can identify the type by the name of the collection.  Some people spell out the type (chips, tokens, etc) and some use abbreviations, such as;  C-Nevada, SS-Nevada, T-Nevada, RK-Nevada. In this case C=chips, SS=Silver Strikes, T=Tokens. You get the idea.  You can always change the names of your collections.  Here are some examples:

In the case that you might only collect one type of casino memorabilia, such as chips:
Nevada
Non-Nevada
Foreign
Illegal
Other
Hard Rock

You can break it down even further if you like, i.e.:
Las Vegas
Northern Nevada
Southern Nevada
Reno
Lake Tahoe
Small Towns

Or, if you have a few different types:
Indian Chips
Indian Silver Strikes
Indian Slot Cards
River Boat Chips
Riverboat Silver Strikes
Riverboat Slot Cards
Wet Chips
Wet Silver Strikes
Wet Slot Cards

Once you create the collections, they will be listed alphabetically. So if you don’t want them in alphabetical order, you should put a number in front of each collection name (i.e., 1-Nevada, 2-Non-Nevada). The listing will be then done by numeric order.

A place for your scans
I also recommend that you create separate folders in your main "CollectorsAssistant" folder for all of your scans.  I named mine "Nevada Scans”, “Non-Nev Scans”, etc).  This allows you to keep all of your scans in one place, and makes it easier to back up everything when it's all in the main folder. Having the scans in folders that match the collection name makes it easier to know exactly where everything is and easier to find specific scans. It also makes it easier when attaching scans to your database items.
